There is no guest booking and no second take. The show is whatever the person on the line is willing to say to a stranger who is funny and also willing to be quiet.
It became a portrait series by accident. Over the years the calls have held confessions, pranks, grief, and people who just wanted to hear a voice. Gethard’s skill is not steering them toward a brand of vulnerability.
You cannot pick the topic in advance. If the first five minutes are awkward, that is also the format.
