S-Town is Brian Reed’s seven-chapter portrait of John B. McLemore and a town in Alabama that John insisted was rotten.
It begins as a requested investigation and becomes a study of friendship, clocks, class, and what a person does with a furious mind. Serial Productions released the whole story at once.
The series is often the show people mean when they say a podcast can be a novel. Reed stays in the tape after the original assignment falls apart, which is the actual plot.
Later chapters reframe earlier jokes, and skipping ahead turns a character study into a pile of anecdotes.
