The Daily

The Daily is the New York Times’ morning narrative: one story, told in about twenty minutes, before the rest of the news has finished shouting.

Michael Barbaro built the early voice. Rachel Abrams, Natalie Kitroeff, and a rotation of hosts have carried it since. A correspondent who reported the piece is usually the person walking you through it.

The form is the contribution. Instead of a roundup, you get a scene, a question, and the finding. It is news, structured like a feature, on a deadline that does not allow a season.

It is made to be heard the day it comes out. Older episodes are still coherent, but the show assumes you share the week it was born in.
