The Retrievals, reported by Susan Burton for Serial Productions and the Times, begins with women at a Yale fertility clinic who said their pain was ignored during egg retrievals.
Season one is a crime against patients told through their own timelines. Season two turns to pain during C-sections, a surgery so common that the suffering had been filed under normal.
Burton’s method is to let procedure become plot. A form, a dose, a nurse’s habit: those are the scenes. The series is narrative medical reporting without the voice of a thriller.
Season one can be heard alone. Season two assumes you can sit with clinical detail. Neither season is a metaphor. They are about what happened in the room.
