Radio Diaries, produced by Joe Richman, hands people recorders and waits. Teenagers, workers, patients, and witnesses narrate their own weeks.
The method is old public-radio craft: cut the diary down until a life has a shape, and leave the mess that makes it believable.
The historical hours, built from tapes people already had, sit alongside the diaries. Both ask the same thing of the listener, which is patience with a voice that was not trained for a microphone.
If an episode is labeled as a diary, expect pauses and rooms. The polish is in the structure, not in a studio voiceover smoothing every edge.
